Hillsong – Glory To The King

No discussion of top Christian music songs is complete without mentioning Hillsong.

Arising out of Hillsong Church in Australia, the Hillsong praise and worship brand has become the dominant praise and worship brand in the world. In recent years much of the praise and worship music out there has become stale, formulaic and self-indulgent, and that is one reason why putting on a Hillsong CD is such a breath of fresh air.

Most importantly, a true passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ comes through in most of their songs, and that is the most important thing.

The following video is of one of their oldies entitled "Glory To The King" (words and music by Darlene Zschech), from Hillsong's album, "All Things Are Possible".....

Allies – Voice Of The Spirit

A lot of Christian music fans don't even realize that Bob Carlisle was in a successful Christian rock band long before he ever launched his solo career.

That group was called "Allies", and they released 6 albums between 1985 and 1992. The video below is of their single entitled "Voice Of The Spirit" off of the 1987 "Shoulder To Shoulder" album.

Allies did have moments of near greatness, and this song represents one of those moments. Unfortunately, the band was plagued by creative inconsistency, and sometimes even Carlisle's soaring vocals were not enough to lift their albums to commercial success.

But even today Allies still has a committed following. The band had so much promise, and there were moments, such as "Harmony" off of their second album "Virtues" in 1986 that had many fans begging for more.

This could have been one of the truly legendary Christian bands. So why weren't they? Perhaps it was bad breaks, not enough marketing, not enough connections, uneven songwriting.....who can say?

But the truth is that if you love classic Christian rock from the 1980s, then you will find something in the Allies catalog of songs that will thrill you.

Check out this video and let us know what you think of Allies.....

Whiteheart – Maybe Today

Many Christian music fans of today have never even heard of Whiteheart, but the reality is that they are truly one of the most underrated Christian rock bands of all time.

The following video is of Whiteheart performing their hit "Maybe Today" which is off of their "Don't Wait For The Movie" album.

This was the first album for lead singer Ric (who knows how to actually spell his name - he changed it on every album) Florian. He blended nicely with the group right away on this album, and that set the stage for some of their later successes.

The truth is that Whiteheart had some of the most technically proficient musicians in the Christian music industry at the time, and you can see a little of that reflected in this video.

"Maybe Today" was one of the best songs off of "Don't Wait For The Movie", but Whiteheart really caught their stride a couple of albums later on the critically acclaimed "Freedom" release.

Anyway, enjoy this video. It contains a message that is perhaps more timely today than it was then.....

Michael W. Smith – Secret Ambition Live In Concert

Have you ever seen Michael W. Smith in concert?

Particularly when he was younger it was an amazing experience.

The video below is of Smitty performing "Secret Ambition" in Fairfax, Virginia at George Mason University on May 2nd, 1993.

"Secret Ambition" is off of Smith's I 2 Eye album, and it represented one of the high points of his career. Few of his songs before or since matched the passion we find in this song.

Welcome To Top Christian Music

christian-rockWelcome to Top Christian Music!  The past 30 years has witnessed a revolution in the world of Christian music, and we plan to remember and celebrate the very best of that music on this site.

If you have an artist that you would like to see highlighted here, if you are looking for information on a band that seems to have disappeared, or if you would even like to submit an article for us to post here just let us know.

We hope that our love for Christian music will come through on this site.  We won't just be writing about the most popular artists - some of the best and most original music out there is from the lesser known artists.

We also appreciate bands who are not willing to compromise the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Because that is what it is all about - communicating the greatest message of hope ever written to a lost and dying world.
